About Us - Pretending to be Big

Happybags was started in March 2005 by Karheena after weeks of fruitless searching for the perfect changing bag. All the great designs were in the US or Europe and there were very few unique bags available in the UK. There was a disastrous attempt to buy direct from a US store where not only did she get presented with a customs and excise bill for the one bag she bought, but the store had sent the wrong design. It was too much trouble to return the bag so she sold it on an auction website for much less than she paid for it.

Karheena decided to contact the designer of the bag she liked and asked if they would be happy to supply a UK online store. As luck would have it, they were just about to launch in the UK and put her in touch with their new UK distributor. Happybags initially just stocked two brands of changing bag and that was it. At the time of writing in March 2008, the Happybags website has upwards of 400 different products in its range.

In August 2006, Quirkybags was launched as a sister site to Happybags and specialises in bags with a function such as reuseable carrier bags and in January 2007 her husband Mark became a partner and also works full-time on the business.

Karheena was also selected to be a finalist in the East of England Businesswoman of the Year Enterprise Award 2007, we didn't win but we did get a night out in a proper dress and high heel shoes (Karheena not Mark!)

A while ago, a savvy supplier of ours told us that when your business is small, you pretend to be big, and when you get big, you pretend to be small. We're still at the pretending to be big stage, but who knows, one day we will pretend to be small....
